(a) Serves as a national youth development research center;
(b) Collect, manage and disseminate information and maintain records of all relevant matters relating to youth development;
(c) Conduct, facilitate or fund research pertaining to youth development;
(d) Provide technical, advisory, legislative and related services with respect to the development of youth;
(e) Establish and maintain relations and cooperations with other relevant institutions in and outside Malaysia for the purpose of enhancing youth development;
(f) Analyze, evaluate and make recommendations on youth activities organized by youth organizations, governments, non-governmental organizations or any other private sector organizations;
(g) Conducting educational and awareness programs to promote youth development;
(h) To cooperate, coordinate and participate in youth development programs or activities related to research conducted by national or international organization;
(i) To perform any other matters that is seen beneficial that enables it to perform functions effectively or which are incidental to the performance of its functions.

Institute For Youth Research Malaysia (IYRES) was launched on 15th of May, 2005 by Tun Abdullah Hj. Ahmad Badawi, the 5th Prime Minister in conjunction with National Youth Day and was established under the Youth Society and Youth Development Act 2007 (Act 668). The establishment of IYRES is in line with the 10th Core of National Youth Development Action Plan which is the Research and Development Core. The previous name, IPPBM was rebranded to Institute for Youth Research Malaysia (IYRES), on the February 6, 2014 by YB. Brig. Jen. Khairy Jamaluddin, Minister of Youth and Sports.
IYRES was established as a statutory body acting as the national youth development research center. IYRES is responsible for conducting research on youth development, analysing current issues related to youth, evaluating and providing input reference to youth development stakeholders.
In addition, IYRES also cooperates, coordinates and participates in youth development programs or activities related with research conducted by national or international organizations.
